This recipe is quick and easy, making it simple to pull together in no time. You can serve your broiled grapefruit for a light breakfast, snack, or dessert.

So without further ado, let’s broil grapefruits!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here is everything you will need, including ingredient substitutions where noted. Measurements can be found in the actual recipe card below.

  • Grapefruit. Use your favorite variety, red or yellow. It’s best to make this recipe when grapefruits are at their peak so it’s sweet and not too sour. In the States, peak season is from November to June.
  • Sugar. Most sugars will do, but I recommend using coconut, pure cane brown or white, raw, and date sugar.
  • Ginger.  Both powdered and fresh grated will do. If you don’t have ginger on hand, try using cinnamon instead.
  • Coconut oil. You can substitute melted vegan butter or omit it completely for an oil-free version. This is also AMAZING with pure maple syrup in place of oil!
  • Salt. Use just a pinch for a finishing touch, can be optional

How to Make Broiled Grapefruits

This is truly one of the easiest recipes ever! Here is a quick look at the steps with photos to help your success.

  • Simply slice your grapefruits in half and cut the segments along the membranes without piercing through the rind. This can also be done after, but it’s easier to do it first.

  • Top with coconut oil, ginger, and sugar.
  • Broil for a few minutes. Once done, the flesh will have plumped up, and the texture will be super tender.

Broiled grapefruit is best served when the grapefruit is warm. The sugar and ginger come together with the juices for a delicious and healthy treat, and it is well worth the minimal effort!

Top Tips

  • Use grapefruits in season for the best results. If grapefruits are too sour, you may not enjoy this recipe. Peak season in the USA is November to June.
  • Add shredded coconut. Sometimes, I like to sprinkle shredded coconut a few minutes before the grapefruit is done. It will toast up, adding flavor and texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 grapefruit, red or yellow
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (coconut, brown, raw, or pure cane), divided
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, vegan butter or pure maple syrup, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger or finely grated ginger, divided
  • salt, to taste

optional toppers

  • shredded unsweetened coconut (add after the first two or three minutes)
  • dash of cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat broiler. You can alternately use a toaster oven for this using a high temp.

Prep grapefruit: Slice grapefruits in half. You may have to slice a tad bit off the bottom if your grapefruits don’t stand straight. Use a grapefruit knife or a serrated paring knife and cut each segment so the pink flesh is cut away from the membrane. Next, gently par around the whole outside area of flesh cutting away from the rind. It will make your grapefruit eating a little easier and less messy.

Assemble: Place each half, cut side up, on a rimmed cookie sheet or baking dish. Top each half with 1 teaspoon or so of coconut oil, 1 teaspoon or so of sugar, and a generous pinch of ginger. Use your fingers to blend and spread the ginger on the grapefruit halves.

Broil: Place under the broiler and cook anywhere from 4 – 7 minutes. I find it best to set your timer for 2 minutes, check grapefruit, if sugar is not caramelized or there is no excessive charring of the grapefruit rind (white part), add another minute and repeat the process until sugar is caramelized and rind is gently colored but not overly burnt all around. If using shredded coconut, sprinkle on top of the grapefruit halves after the first 2 minutes. Once done, sprinkle with salt.

Serve: Enjoy right away or let cool and serve at room temp.

Notes

This recipe is best with in season grapefruits that are on the sweeter side and not too sour.

As with all my recipes, adjust the ingredients to suit your taste, adding more or less of anything.

  3. I might just try this! I've started eating raw grapefruit with some stevia sprinkled over it because the plain taste of it is too tart for me. This would be a nice variant on the way I eat grapefruits now.
