Green Matcha Popcorn

Popcorn and green tea mashup! Green Matcha Popcorn made on the stovetop (or popcorn maker) is a delicious change from the usual popcorn routine, creating a healthy snack everyone will love!

Popcorn is my new obsession, along with all kinds of green tea. This Green Matcha Popcorn is a twist of the unusual and a gourmet popcorn lover’s delight!

Two of the green teas I’ve used most lately are matcha and the Zen green tea from Tazo (affiliate link). The Zen tea is a ‘harmonious’ blend of green tea, lemongrass, and spearmint which made for a really interesting twist..

Green tea is very good for you, and with added flavors makes for a really wonderful popcorn seasoning. My mind was thinking kettle corn and so I added a bit of sugar to the mix giving it a subtle sweetness as well.

Today I share you with a fun recipe to try. When you’re feeling tired of all the usual popcorn seasoning, this will be a welcome change!

Ingredients You’ll Need

In this healthy recipe, popcorn is made on the stovetop with coconut oil, matcha, and sugar for a quick and easy snack for movie night, traveling, or just whenever you want popcorn!

Here is everything you’ll need:

  • coconut oil
  • popcorn kernels
  • matcha
  • Tazo Zen tea bags – optional
  • coconut sugar – or pure cane or monkfruit sweetener

How To Make Green Matcha Stovetop Popcorn

The method shown here is for the stovetop, but the popcorn maker instructions are in the fully printable recipe card below.

  • Mix matcha seasoning. If using the zen tea bags, cut the bag open, and place the tea in a small bowl with the matcha and sugar, and mix well to combine. Set aside.

  • In a large stock pot, heat oil over medium-high to high heat.
  • Once the oil has melted, add popcorn kernels, and swirl the pot to coat the kernels.

  • Cover, shake, and let the popcorn pop. Cover and shake every 10 seconds or so to move the kernels around. This helps to keep them from burning on the bottom. About 3 minutes in, you should hear continual popping. At this time, you can stop shaking. Listen for the slowdown of popping.
  • Add seasoning. Turn the heat off, uncover, add seasoning, cover, and carefully shake the pot every which way to coat your popcorn. Lift the lid; if you have a lot of seasoning on the lid and sides of the pot, use a flat-edge spatula to scrape it off and mix it in.

And that’s it, now you’re ready to enjoy!

Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes about 12 to 14 cups.

How To Store + Snack Prep

  • Counter or pantry: Popped stovetop popcorn can be stored in sealed containers or ziplock bags for 1 – 2 weeks. To store, be sure it’s sealed well without moisture or much air to keep it from going stale too soon.
  • Refrigerator: Popcorn can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 – 3 weeks; just be sure to remove as much air and moisture as possible before sealing.
  • Freezer: Popped matcha popcorn is freezer-safe and will last 2 – 3 months if stored properly. To freeze, remove as much air as possible and keep moisture out of the container or baggie before sealing.
  • Snack bags to-go: This popcorn recipe is also great for prepping grab-n-go snack bags. Store in small ziplock baggies for a quick treat to-go. Store the popcorn as mentioned above.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoon matcha
  • 12 Tazo Zen tea bags, optional (affiliate link)
  • 1 tablespoons coconut sugar (or organic pure cane)

Instructions

Matcha seasoning: In a small bowl, whisk together the matcha, sugar, and tea from the tea bags. Set aside.

Stock pot:

  • In a large stock pot, heat oil over medium high to high heat. Once the oil has melted, add popcorn kernels, swirl the pot to coat the kernels.
  • Cover, shake every 10 seconds or so to move the kernels around. You want to move them around so they don’t burn on the bottom. You should hear continual popping about 3 minutes in, at this time you can stop shaking, listen for the slow down of popping.
  • Turn heat off, uncover, add seasoning, cover and carefully shake the pot every which way to coat your popcorn. Lift lid, if you have a lot of seasoning on the lid and sides of the pot, use a flat edge spatula to scrape it off and mix it in.

Popcorn maker:

  • Add popcorn, cook as directed and move to a large bowl.
  • In a small bowl, melt coconut oil.
  • Once popcorn is done, drizzle with oil and top with seasoning, toss to coat well.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

Makes about 12 to 14 cups.

Store: Leftovers can be stored in airtight containers for 7 – 14 days.

Notes

Using the oil in the stock pot will not make the popcorn oily at all. Using the oil with the popcorn maker method may leave an oily residue on your popcorn and fingers.

You may like to add a pinch of mineral salt. FYI, too much will ruin the flavor combination which is why I left it out. I learned from experience and much prefer the soft subtle of the sweet with the flavors in the Zen tea. Add salt to your discretion.

  1. What is it supposed to taste like? I tried this recipe, but my popcorn didn’t seem to have much flavor. Please reply as I LOVE matcha and would like to try to make it again.

      It should have a light matcha flavor with a bit of sweetness from the sugar. You can double the seasoning if you don’t find it strong enough for you. I hope that helps!

    I love this idea :) I just had a cup of match tea so I'm definitely going to try this with that or some bagged tea. It is a great idea, think I'll add a little cardamom too, Thank you for sharing.
