Ingredient Notes
Here are the basic ingredients for a vegan milkshake, including ingredient variations:
- Banana or Vanilla Non-Dairy Ice Cream – Keep it whole food plant-based with a banana or use your favorite dairy-free ice cream.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk – This recipe works with just about any non-dairy milk, such as almond, cashew, oat, soy, or coconut milk.
- Cacao or Cocoa Powder – Use your preferred chocolate. If keeping this raw, use cacao powder with the banana option.
- Vanilla – If using vanilla-flavored milk, you can skip or add more for even more flavor.
Optional Add-ins:
- Dates – Want to sweeten your milkshake even more? Add 1 pitted medjool date, they are naturally sweet with a hint of caramel.
- Cinnamon – Take your milkshake up a notch with the addition of a little cinnamon!
How To Vegan Make Vegan Chocolate Milkshake
Making a vegan milkshake is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3!
- Choose the milkshake base – frozen bananas or dairy-free ice cream.
- Add the banana or ice cream to your blender cup, along with the plant milk, vanilla, and cocoa powder, and blend until smooth and creamy.
- Pour into glasses and top with your favorite toppings.
That’s it, now you’re ready to enjoy this deliciously, healthy milkshake!
Milkshake Tips
- Serve your milkshake in frosted glasses! Put your glasses in the freezer an hour before making your shake for a perfectly chilled and frosted glass that will keep your drink chilly.
- Make a protein milkshake. Turn this into a protein shake by adding a scoop of vegan protein powder or 2 tablespoons of Almond Butter. This is especially good for those just starting a plant-based diet and unsure of how to get enough protein or those who are always on the go.

I made it with vegan ice cream, oat milk and one added date – it was really delicious! I added an ice cube to the blender to keep it slushy and it didn’t take any sweetness away. Will surely make this again!
Definitely going to try this
Just made this to satisfy a sweet tooth and we LOVE it, will definitely become a staple of ours now. Really like how healthy it is but still tastes great with a smooth consistency. Bonus that it’s so easy to make!
This looks amazing! Do you know about how many ounces one serving makes?
I would say it’s about 12 ounces per serving.
Instead of cocoa, can you use raw cacao powder?
Yes, absolutely – use cacao or cocoa powder!
wow! yummo!! i omitted the cinnamon and used coconut milk-but it was still delicious!!!
Do you have a recommendation on a protein powder?
I trade up between Garden of Life Raw Protein Powders and Vega One. I like Garden of Life because they have powders with no stevia which I prefer. But the Vega is good too. I've also heard that Sun Warrior is an excellent source too! Here is a pretty thourogh article on protein powders from the Lunchbox Bunch: http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/2013/04/vegan-protein-powders-for-smoothies-my.html
This is one of my favorites. I added some almond butter to make it a little thicker.
That sounds delicious! I will have to try that too. :)
I love these recipes! So easy and healthy. Thanks for posting!
