Easy Red Lentil Pasta Sauce
Hearty Red Lentil Pasta Sauce – This rich, flavorful vegan sauce is easy to make in one pot with simple ingredients and is ready in just 25 minutes. High in protein and packed with flavor, it’s a delicious alternative to traditional pasta sauce!

Hi friends! Today I’m so excited to share one of my favorite pantry staple recipes — this Easy Red Lentil Pasta Sauce. It’s been a regular in our house for a while now, and I know you’ll love it too!
This hearty sauce has all the cozy, savory comfort of a classic marinara, but with a wholesome boost of plant-based protein from red lentils. It’s rich and flavorful, and it works beautifully as a simple pasta sauce or even as a lasagna filling.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Hearty & Protein-Packed — The red lentils break down beautifully as they simmer, giving the sauce a thick, satisfying texture and a healthy dose of plant-based protein.
- Robust Italian Flavor — Tomatoes, herbs, and a splash of balsamic vinegar create that rich, Italian-inspired taste we all crave.
- One-Pot Simplicity — Everything cooks quickly in a single pot with minimal cleanup. Perfect for busy weeknights.
- Meal Prep Friendly — It tastes even better the next day and freezes beautifully, making it a lifesaver for future meals.
- Family Approved — Mild enough for the kids, but flavorful enough for the adults. It’s truly a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients & Substitutions
This recipe uses a handful of pantry staple ingredients and can be easily customized.
- Olive Oil — Used to sauté the vegetables and build flavor. Easily made oil-free by using water or vegetable broth instead.
- Onion & Garlic — The essential aromatic base. Yellow or white onion works best. Fresh garlic is highly recommended for the best flavor.
- Dried Oregano & Basil — These classic Italian herbs give the sauce its signature savory flavor. You can substitute with Italian seasoning if needed.
- Red Lentils — The star of the recipe! They cook quickly (about 20 minutes). Do not substitute with other lentil varieties, as they won’t break down the same way and will puree into a muddy color.
- Crushed Tomatoes or Passata — Forms the rich tomato base. Crushed tomatoes give more texture, while passata creates a smoother sauce.
- Vegetable Broth — Low-sodium is preferred to control the salt level. You can use water in a pinch, but the flavor won’t be as rich.
- Balsamic Vinegar or Lemon Juice — Added at the end to brighten and balance the sauce. Balsamic adds richness while lemon brings freshness.

How to Make Red Lentil Pasta Sauce
Making this lentil pasta sauce is easy as can be! Have all ingredients ready before you start, as the preparation takes no time at all.

Sauté aromatics: Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion. Cook for 5–6 minutes until softened. Add the garlic, oregano, and basil, and cook for 1 more minute.
Add lentils and liquids: Stir in the rinsed red lentils, crushed tomatoes, and vegetable broth.
Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover partially and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lentils are very soft and the sauce has thickened.

Finish the sauce: Stir in balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning. Enjoy as is or for a smoother sauce (our favorite way to serve it), blend with an immersion blender right in the pot.
Key Tips For Success
- Rinse the lentils well before using. This removes excess starch and helps prevent the sauce from becoming too thick or gummy.
- Adjust consistency as needed — If the sauce gets too thick, stir in a splash of vegetable broth or reserved pasta water. If it’s too thin, simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
- Make it ahead — This sauce tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld. It’s excellent for meal prep and freezes beautifully.
- For extra richness — Stir in a spoonful of cashew butter, tahini, or coconut milk at the end for a creamier sauce.
How To Use Red Lentil Pasta Sauce
Toss it with cooked pasta (penne, rigatoni, rotini, or spaghetti works well). Garnish with fresh basil and nutritional yeast or vegan parmesan (or our delicious Almond Parm). We love adding steamed spinach to the mix!
Use it as a marinara sauce for layering in lasagna. This protein-rich sauce will boost the nutritional value of your favorite Vegan Lasagna!
